Mistfall Hunter PvE
Quick answer: Mistfall Hunter PvE is the monster layer of the PvPvE loop — you clear the Corroded, fight map bosses, defeat the Returner Woodling for a Soul of Return, ring the bell to extract, and loot the map along the way. Rival players share every map, so a “PvE run” is never fully safe: they can contest kills, third-party fights, or camp your extraction route. There is no pure PvE mode yet — every documented mode at launch (Hallowgrove Normal/Chaos, Brandrgarde Normal/Cataclysm) is PvPvE, though a dedicated PvE mode remains on the roadmap.
PvE is the backbone of Mistfall Hunter’s PvPvE loop. Even though rival Gyldhunters share every map, the PvE layer — exploring, clearing monsters, fighting bosses, and extracting — is what most of a raid consists of. Bellring Games has described PvE as the foundation of every dive into the mist: the layer that makes exploration, routing, and resource decisions matter, with PvP as the variable that changes how each raid plays out.

The PvE loop
A standard run follows a repeatable structure:
- Prepare at camp — pick a class, equip a loadout (optionally via a Combat Bag), and check the map’s entry requirements.
- Enter a region and explore — loot chests, break crates, kill monsters, and gather Gyldenblood and crafting materials.
- Find the Returner Woodling — according to the official site, a rare monster you must locate and defeat to obtain a Soul of Return, the item that lets you find your way home.
- Ring the bell to extract — once the Woodling is defeated it transforms into a Soul Tree with a bell attached; interacting with the bell rings it five times to extract. Guides note that the ringing sound carries to other players in the match, so extraction draws attention. Anything you do not extract is lost on death.
Maps and modes
Two regions were documented at launch, each with difficulty modes. Hallowgrove and Brandrgarde differ in pressure, entry requirements, and allowed Combat Bags.
| Map | Mode | Difficulty | Entry requirement | Allowed Combat Bags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hallowgrove | Normal | ★★☆☆☆ | Equipment quality Excellent or lower | Novice, Advanced, Pro |
| Hallowgrove | Chaos | ★★★★☆ | Equipment value 1,000+ | Advanced, Pro, Elite |
| Brandrgarde | Normal | ★★☆☆☆ | Equipment value 300+ | Novice, Advanced, Pro, Elite |
| Brandrgarde | Cataclysm | Unknown | Data not yet published | Data not yet published |
Hallowgrove has no shrinking zone, so the Gyldenmist pressure is low and players can explore freely; it is recommended as a first destination for new Gyldhunters. Brandrgarde’s mist closes in over time, producing a faster and more intense combat experience. Revival is limited to once per run on the documented modes.
Enemies
The world is overrun by corrupted creatures. Basic enemies are grouped under the Corroded — twisted monsters roaming the ruined regions. Tougher elite encounters and mini-bosses appear throughout; community bestiary documentation describes a Warden that swings a heavy double-headed pillory, a Fungus Matron that blocks pathways and releases damaging spore clouds, and a Foul Hound Alpha that leads a hound pack. Community wikis note that elite enemies apply pressure before they call for reinforcements, so they are best dealt with before they escalate a fight.
Bosses
Bosses are the set-piece PvE encounters and a main source of top-tier rewards. Named boss fights that appear in quests and developer announcements include:
- Otto, the Flesheater — a Mist Lord twisted by divine blood deep within Brandrgarde. The main quest The Flesheater’s Feast sends you to kill him in the Sealed Grounds or the Main Hall. Community coverage describes the fight as multi-phase, with an additional challenge mode.
- Sálmar, the Cursed Moonwane — a two-phase boss tied to Hallowgrove, fought in Soul Experiment in Chaos mode. Community documentation notes she was showcased during the Open Beta as an Einherjar Cursed Moonwane encounter, and she is tied to the Prayer of the Moon lore.
- General Harald — the fallen general of Brandrgarde and a Mist Lord boss. He was the subject of an official “Trio Einherjar Harald Hunt Speedrun” challenge, in which squads raced to defeat him in Chaos trio mode for rewards. His story is told in the Secrets questline.
- Mist Lords — a boss category that guards the richest treasure across the ruins. In official developer notes, the studio called defeating Mist Lords on Cataclysm difficulty “the most common way to obtain top-tier gear,” adding that it inherently requires strong PvE play. The toughest Mist Lord hunts run in Einherjar mode, a higher-difficulty variant reachable within a Chaos match and switched on with a Dried Flower Knot, a Legendary cipher key found in Brandrgarde and Hallowgrove exploration or the auction house.
Boss rewards are substantial. Developer announcements say the best rewards in the game come from defeating powerful PvE bosses, and holy weapons — a top weapon tier with exclusive gameplay affixes — drop from map bosses, with each boss offering its own unique weapon.
PvE inside a PvPvE world
PvE content does not happen in a private instance. Because other Gyldhunters share the map, a boss fight is also a race: rival players can contest the kill, third-party a weakened team, or camp the extraction route. Several previews note that you really need a group to take down the main boss of a map, and Reddit players report that some story objectives, such as killing the boss Otto, are effectively impossible solo because monsters and mobs scale for trios. The developer’s response has been to keep deepening the PvE layer — continuing to expand bosses, map zones, and combat layers — while keeping a pure PvE mode as a roadmap item without a firm date.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the PvE extraction loop in Mistfall Hunter? A standard run follows a repeatable structure: prepare at camp with a class and loadout, enter a region and explore (loot chests, break crates, kill monsters, gather Gyldenblood), defeat the Returner Woodling to obtain a Soul of Return, then ring the bell five times to extract. Anything you do not extract is lost on death.
Who can steal my PvE loot in Mistfall Hunter? Any rival Gyldhunter on the map. PvE content does not happen in a private instance — other players can contest a boss kill, third-party a weakened team, or camp the extraction route, and the bell’s ringing carries to the whole match, drawing attention to your extract.
Does Mistfall Hunter have a pure PvE mode? Not yet. The developer keeps a pure PvE mode on the roadmap without a firm date; every documented map mode at launch (Hallowgrove Normal/Chaos, Brandrgarde Normal/Cataclysm) is PvPvE.
Can you clear PvE content solo in Mistfall Hunter? Partially. Several previews note that you really need a group to take down a map’s main boss, and Reddit players report that story objectives such as killing the boss Otto are effectively impossible solo because monsters and mobs scale for trios.
