It launched worldwide on July 29, 2026 (6:00 PM PT) / July 30, 2026 (01:00 UTC) on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, arriving Day One on Xbox Game Pass. Quick Answer
Mistfall Hunter is a dark-fantasy extraction game with melee-first combat. You play a Gyldhunter who drops into mist-shrouded zones to loot, fight AI monsters and rival players, and extract with your haul before a run-ending death takes it all. The one-sentence core loop: scavenge → fight → extract → upgrade → repeat — Escape from Tarkov’s loop, but with swords and magic instead of guns.

Who Made Mistfall Hunter?
Mistfall Hunter was developed by Bellring Games, an independent studio, and published by Skystone Games — the label co-founded by Diablo creator David Brevik. The developers have also built their own Bellring Anti-Cheat for the PC version. The game is their dark-fantasy take on the extraction genre (see What Kind of Game It Is below).
The Core Gameplay Loop
Like the extraction shooters it descends from, Mistfall Hunter is built on a scavenge-fight-extract cycle. You play a Gyldhunter who drops into mist-shrouded zones to:
- Scavenge — gather loot, Gyldenblood, and relics from the corrupted world.
- Fight — battle AI enemies (the Corroded) and rival Gyldhunters hunting the same spoils.
- Extract — defeat a Returner Woodling to open an exit and escape before the run is taken from you. If you die before extracting, you lose everything you carried that run.
Solo and three-player squads are both supported, and a shrinking Gyldenmist zone keeps matches from dragging. Launch-guide coverage framed the game as a “casual extraction” middle ground — less punishing than Tarkov-style titles, with combat closer to a fast Souls-like than a shooter; NotebookCheck’s August 3 coverage summed it up as “Tarkov with swords, not guns.” The full escape sequence is explained step by step in our How to Extract guide.
Story and Setting
Per the official Steam description, the setting is post-apocalyptic dark fantasy: “The gods have fallen, and the Gyldenmist is consuming the world.” Revived by a mysterious girl named Dew, you are sent into the forbidden land to harvest Gyldenblood and mend the shattered Web of Fate — a narrative hook for the seasonal live-service structure rather than a single-player campaign.
Classes and Combat
Combat is fast, deliberate third-person action built on stamina, positioning, timing, combos, and a free-aim system for targeting weak points. There are six classes, each with two weapon stances you can swap mid-fight:
Builds are deepened by talent trees, gem affixes that customize gear, and a wide pool of active skills. Trying to pick a main? Our Best Class guide ranks all six for solo, PvP, and beginner play. The game is PvPvE (see Is Mistfall Hunter PvP?): other players share the same map as the AI, and killing a rival hunter can hand you their haul — which launch coverage consistently called the biggest danger in most runs.

Maps and Seasons
Two maps shipped with the launch content: Hallowgrove and Brandrgarde. The game is a live-service title with seasons roughly every three months; Season 1 “Soul Hunt” launched with the game, and the roadmap confirms future seasons will add new classes, arcana, zones, and relics.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mistfall Hunter? Mistfall Hunter is a third-person PvPvE extraction ARPG in a dark fantasy setting, developed by Bellring Games and published by Skystone Games (David Brevik’s label). It launched July 29–30, 2026 on PC (Steam), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S and is included Day One on Xbox Game Pass. You play a Gyldhunter who drops into mist-shrouded zones to loot, fight, and extract — dying in a run means losing everything you carried.
What kind of game is Mistfall Hunter? It is an extraction game first: a PvPvE loot-run loop where you share the map with AI monsters and rival player squads, and only successfully extracting keeps your loot. What makes it unusual is the combat — fast, deliberate third-person melee and magic with Souls-like stamina and timing, across six classes, instead of guns. Press coverage calls it “Tarkov with swords” (NotebookCheck, Aug 3, 2026) or an “extraction brawler” (GameSpot, Aug 4, 2026).
How does Mistfall Hunter work? Each run drops you into a zone (Hallowgrove or Brandrgarde at launch) to scavenge loot, Gyldenblood, and relics; fight the Corroded and rival Gyldhunters; and extract through an exit opened by defeating a Returner Woodling before the shrinking Gyldenmist closes in. Die before extracting and you lose everything you carried that run. Between runs you upgrade your camp and character in a hub — DualShockers’ August 4 review compared it to Monster Hunter’s base camp. Play solo or in squads of up to three, with full crossplay.
Is Mistfall Hunter good? Mostly yes, with caveats — reviewers praise the combat core while flagging UI and design friction. Steam’s overall rating is Mixed at ~65% positive of 7,618 reviews as of August 5, 2026 (Steam store page): English, Russian, and Simplified Chinese pools are Mixed, while German and Brazilian-Portuguese pools are positive. GameSpot’s August 4 feature (“Mistfall Hunter Has Made Me A Believer In Extraction Games”) calls it an “extraction brawler” the author is “in love with”; NoobFeed’s August 1 review called the blend “genuinely fresh”; DualShockers’ August 4 review concludes it is “a great game that’s buried under some questionable design choices,” singling out the UI, balance, and QoL. See our full Mistfall Hunter Review.
Is Mistfall Hunter free? No. It costs $24.99 (Standard) or $39.99 (Deluxe), with no paid stat boosts — the in-game store is cosmetic only. The one free way in is Xbox Game Pass (Ultimate/Premium and PC Game Pass), which includes it Day One. Full breakdown: Is Mistfall Hunter Free?.
Is Mistfall Hunter a Soulslike? Combat draws heavily on Souls-style mechanics — stamina management, dodges, parries, and timing — but plays faster than a FromSoftware game, and the structure is extraction-based rather than level-based. Reviewers describe it as Souls-like action blended into an extraction game rather than a pure Soulslike.
How many players does Mistfall Hunter have? Roughly 34,000 concurrent Steam players at the August 5, 2026 check (SteamDB), with an all-time peak of 44,472 set on the August 2–3 weekend — Steam-only figures, so PS5, Xbox, and Game Pass players are extra. The game also passed 500,000 Gyldhunters (accounts) across all platforms in its first week. Live numbers: Mistfall Hunter Player Count.
