Builds & Playstyle
The Recruit Sword and Shield is the Mercenary’s on-ramp to its signature weapon — the Common-tier set where the branch’s reactive loop is meant to be learned. Because its 12 Attack carries no modifier, the build you play is decided by your hands, not the weapon: it is equally at home feeding the Sword & Shield control build’s blade-state stacking and its 100% Block PvP setup, both of which scale off the same Block discipline.
- Where it sits: the bottom of the real sword-and-shield ladder (Combat Value 200), above the damaged Rusty Recruit Sword and Shield (CV 100) and below the Fine Iron Sword and Shield (Rare, CV 300).
- When to use it: your opening sessions as a Mercenary while you learn block timing and blade-state windows.
- When to swap: once a Rare or better set drops, or as soon as you can afford one — the Recruit set is a freebie, not a keeper.
Community note: launch guides recommend the Mercenary as the first class specifically because weapons like this let new players practice Block without gear pressure; no tier list ranks individual sword-and-shield sets. That is community opinion from the launch window, not official data.
